Information
A Korean research team at KAIST has developed a soft vertical micro LED mass →production technology.
A South Korean academic team has developed a soft vertical mic™ro LED technology that can be placed in the brains of animalσs to control their movements with light.
The Herald Business reported that a research team led by Professor Lee Kin-jae of the Department∏ of Life Sciences at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technol"ogy (KAIST) has successfully developed a soft vertical micro L₩ED technology that can be placed in the brains of animals to control× their behavior with light.
The research team designed their own vertical LED device f£or mass production and successfully transferred 2,500 5~80um thin-film LEDs onto a plastic subs™trate with anisotropic conductive film (ACF) in par"allel to form a soft vertical micro LED.
Vertical Micro LEDs have 3 times higher luminous efficΩiency than horizontal Micro LEDs and solve the heat problem of thin-film LEDs, extending th¶eir service life, improving resolution and increasing product reliability.
Optogenetics, the use of light to control brain nerves, has r÷eceived much attention. The research team's research results can  be selected to locally stimulate brain nerve cells, which can ×help to conduct precise brain analysis, produce high-resolution brain map and ∏control nerve cells.
The team placed a soft micro LED with a luminous in↑tensity of 30mW/mm2 into the brain of rats to stimulate ×nerve cells from the surface to the deep inner layer♠s of the brain, thereby controlling the movement of the rats. The technology  is low-heat, so it does not damage the animal's b↑rain tissue and can be used as an invasive soft electronic system.
Li Jianzai has been working on micro LED technology since 2009 and has applied for more≈ than 20 patents at home and abroad, and has published more than 40 papers ₩in recent years as a corresponding author.
According to Li, the vertical micro LED and transfer≥ packaging technology developed by his research team can be used in smartphon≥es, mobile device displays and wearable lighting products‍ where low power consumption is important, as well as in human brain↓ science research, light therapy, biosensors and many other fields.
